Joey Gase made the most of limited opportunities on the track during May, posting a career high finish on the Monster Energy Cup Series and rolling two solid finishes on the Xfinity Series into the 19th spot in the series driver standings.
Gase began the month at Talladega for the Xfinity Sparks Energy 300 on May 6. Starting the race 35th, Gase steadily moved through the pack and rode a great performance from his pit crew to a 16th place finish. The finish was his second-best (behind his 7th place finish at Daytona) on the Xfinity Series this season and landed him 12 driver points. Gase drove his trademark Jimmy Means Racing #52 car sponsored by Sparks Energy and Donate Life Alabama in the race.
Doing the weekend double, Gase jumped in the Jay Robinson owned Sparks Energy #15 Chevrolet for the Geico 500 Monster Energy Cup Series race on May 7. Again, starting toward the back in the 39th spot, Gase was able to work through traffic and haul in a 21st place finish. The finish was the highest on the Monster Energy Cup Series in Gase’s career.
After a mid-month break, Gase returned to the track on May 27 for the Hisense 4K TV 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the Xfinity Series. Gase started 35th in the race and again worked his way through the pack finishing 23rd. The solid finish vaulted him into the Top 20 of the Xfinity Series driver standings, placing him 19th. Going into this weekend’s races, Gase is just 29 points out of the 13th spot in the driver standings.
Gase will race this weekend on the Xfinity Series in the OneMain Financial 200 at the Dover International Speedway.
