Summer has been busy … and successful … for Joey Gase.
The Iowa native returned home for a pair of races in late June. On June 23, Gase hopped in his familiar No. 35 Late Model car during Iowa Donor Network Night at Hawkeye Downs in his hometown of Cedar Rapids. Gase managed an overheating engine to claim victory in the six-car field.
“It’s good, it’s a lot of fun to be out here and see a lot of old faces,” Gase, who won the late model feature for the third time in four years, told the Cedar Rapids Gazette. “It all started for me, watching my dad (Bob Gase) out here so it’s always fun to come back.”
Gase then rolled over to the Iowa Speedway for the American Ethanol E15 250 Presented by Enogen on June 24. He started the race 37th and steadily marched through the pack for a Top 20 finish, crossing the line 18th overall. The strong finish thrilled the home state crowd and set the stage for a strong Daytona performance the following week.
In the Coca-Cola Firecracker 250 on July 1, Gase again started toward the back of the pack, but didn’t stay there long. Gase managed to crack the Top 10 and earn 27 driver points with the finish.
Gase returned to the Monster Energy series for a start at the Brantley Gilbert Big Machine Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The start marked Gase’s first at the Brickyard 400 and saw him battle for a Top 20 spot before a late accident pushed him to a 25th place finish.
